What is Experiments with FIRE?

Experiments with FIRE is a step-by-step guide to Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE). But this isn’t another blog full of generic advice written by someone who read a few books. Every strategy here has been tested firsthand, in real life, with real money, and real consequences.

I call each topic an “Experiment” because that’s exactly what it is. A concept to explore, test, and apply to your own financial journey. Some experiments will change your life. Others might not fit your situation. The point is to try, learn, and keep moving forward.

The 7 Phases of FIRE

The series is structured as 7 progressive phases. Start wherever you are, and work your way forward.

Phase 1: Discovering Your FIRE

The fundamentals. What FIRE actually is, how the math works, what your FIRE number looks like, and whether this path makes sense for you. If you’re brand new to FIRE, start here.

Phase 2: Igniting Your FIRE

Your relationship with money runs deeper than you think. This phase is about reshaping your financial mindset, understanding your spending triggers, and building the mental foundation that makes everything else possible.

Phase 3: Nurturing Your FIRE

This is where the rubber meets the road. Emergency funds, budgeting, debt management, credit building, automating your finances, and finding ways to save more without making yourself miserable.

Phase 4: Fueling Your FIRE

Your income is your most powerful wealth-building tool. Career advancement, salary negotiation, side hustles, passive income, and building multiple income streams to accelerate your timeline.

Phase 5: Amplifying Your FIRE

Make your money work harder than you do. Index funds, retirement accounts, 401(k) strategies, Roth conversions, and building an investment portfolio that grows while you sleep.

Phase 6: Protecting Your FIRE

You’ve built wealth. Now keep it. Tax optimization, insurance strategies, estate planning, and protecting what you’ve worked so hard to build.

Phase 7: Enjoying Your FIRE

The finish line is just the beginning. Planning your retirement, withdrawal strategies, healthcare, and designing a life that’s about more than just money.
